Can you help me choose which scooter to buy?
We'd be delighted to help you choose, you can call into our showroom or call us. We will need to know:
How often will you be using your scooter?
For what type of journeys - commuting, fun?
Your average weekly mileage
Type of journey - open road or city?
How much storage capacity you will need
What sort of licence you have or plan to get
How much can I expect to pay in running costs?
Scooters have fantastic fuel economy; you can expect between 80 and 100 miles to the gallon.
Regular servicing is essential and is required every 3000km. Prices vary for labour, but an average service should be completed in 1-2 hours.
Your first year's insurance could be free or subsidised, but the good news is we also offer a unique second year package, starting from £250.00.
Road tax for scooters is only £15 per year.
An article in Auto Express (issue 713) proves our point:
"If you are still not sure whether to swap train, bus or car for a scooter, then let your wallet do the talking. In the past five months we have clocked up 1127 miles on our Jetset 150, for running costs of only £160 - including fuel! The equivalent bus pass for the same period would have set us back £163, while we`d have spent £540 on the London Underground!
"The cost of the service was higher than normal because we needed a new tyre (£45 including fitting) - something to do with aggressive riding. We blame the scooter`s fine handling for encouraging us to push it hard through traffic. Urban commuting was never easier." |
What is the difference between a moped and motorcycle?
A moped has a 49cc engine or less and is restricted to 51kph. A motorcycle has an engine capacity of above 49cc with no mechanical restriction.
How safe are scooters?
Scooters like motorcycles can be dangerous, but proper training, protective clothing and responsible riding can minimise the risk. Scooters need regular maintenance to make sure they are safe and in a roadworthy condition.
Can I ride a scooter on my car licence?
You can ride a moped (50cc) on your car licence provided that you passed you test before 1st February 2001, otherwise a CBT is compulsory.
What is CBT?
Compulsory Basic Training is usually a 1-day training course with a qualified instructor. It is mandatory in some cases depending upon your licence and age but we strongly recommend it for all. You will need to meet a minimum standard but CBT courses have a 98% pass rate.
What is a PDI?
Our experience comes from research and the knowledge that we have of the scooter market. A significant proportion of new scooters are returned to the dealers within 6 months. This is due to the fact that the scooter is not prepared properly before the customer receives it.
For example, the first time you get caught in a shower of rain, you don`t want your new scooter to develop an electrical fault and refuse to start. We ensure proper preparation and attention to detail, which results in our scooters providing a trouble free form of transport. Using the above example, we apply a waterproof protection to all electrical contacts. We also carry out an additional 15 point check over and above a standard PDI (pre delivery inspection).
How often will my scooter need servicing?
To keep your scooter in top condition, a service is required every 3000km or every 6 months which ever comes first.
How long does the warranty on an Azzurri Moto scooter last?
Three years (terms and conditions apply)
Can I carry a passenger?
It depends on your licence - see our page on licensing.
Can I add my son/daughter/other riders to my policy when they reach 16?
Policies cover up to 4 family members or riders at the same address for a small additional charge.
Can I get hold of parts for my scooter easily?
Yes - there is over half a million pounds worth of stock held in the UK. Parts are normally available within 24 hours and are backed by the manufacturers parts promise.
What's the difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke engine?
A four-stroke engine works like a car engine; oil is topped up and changed at regular service intervals. A two-stroke engine mixes oil and fuel together so the oil needs to be regularly checked and topped up (we suggest checking every time you fill up with fuel).
A four stroke is quieter and smoother. A two stroke is more responsive but louder. Two stroke engines tend to be used in models with smaller engines but for people who want to be quick off the mark.
What's the difference between a liquid-cooled and air-cooled engine?
Liquid cooled engines use a liquid coolant, radiator and fan to keep the engine at the right temperature even when stuck in traffic, therefore working more efficiently. Air-cooled engines rely on forced air driven around the engine when the scooter is moving. Acceleration is smoother and quicker on liquid cooled models.
When are disc brakes and drum brakes used?
Disc brakes are used on all front wheels. Most models have drum brakes on the rear. Performance models have disc brakes on the rear to match braking capacity to higher speeds.
What does SIS mean?
It's an independent steering system with mechanical and automatic anti dive, which means that cornering and braking is easier, smoother and safer and handling is more responsive. It is a patented system and is unique to Italjet.
How can I secure my scooter?
We recommend a high quality lock and chain system used to lock your scooter to a fixed object. 8 out of 10 scooters stolen were not secured to a fixed object. Our scooters are supplied with a 14-point security marking system, which registers your vehicle internationally. If your scooter is stolen this means it can be traced and returned to its rightful owner. We recommend and use only Thatcham approved security products, which have undergone rigorous and strictly controlled tests against attack. Thatcham approved products will also get you discount off insurance.
What about the weather?
We offer a range of clothing and accessories, which give you maximum protection against the elements.
Products include:
Wind proof/water proof over jackets
Wind proof/water proof over trousers
Wind shields for your scooter
Protective covers
Our unique Scooop model will have an optional Plexiglas roof
What about accessories?
We have a range of accessories for you and your scooter, including:
Wind shields
Luggage racks
Top boxes
Thatcham approved security devices
Safety helmets
A full range of designer motorcycle wear
What is derestriction?
All 50cc mopeds are restricted to 51kph (approximately 30 mph). This is achieved through a mechanical restriction attached to the vehicle. This can be legally removed depending upon the riders licence and once 500km has been clocked up. This will allow the scooter to reach a higher speed of up to 60 mph depending upon the model.
How can I make my scooter go faster?
There are many parts and products available to increase power. Please note that the fitting of non-genuine parts is likely to invalidate any warranty that your scooter has. We would be more than happy to answer any questions you have on this. Please also remember the legal requirements (see above).
